ISLAND LIVING
MEDITERRANEAN
GOZO
Samudra is located in the middle of the Mediterranean sea on the island of Gozo in the village of Qala (which derives from Arabic and Maltese for a sheltered haven).
Gozo, which means 'joy', is a little spit of land sitting in the sea with a unique rocky coastal landscape, waters so crystal-clear and the sky so bright blue that you’ll have to rub your eyes to believe what you are seeing.
Gozo is the second-largest island of the Maltese Archipelago and is an ideal destination for those who treasure a slow, relaxed rhythm of life and cherish the unspoiled countryside and being close to the sea. The beauty of surrounding nature all around creates an ambiance of complete peace.
The island is known and loved for its beautiful green valleys, scenic hills, hidden beaches, and crystal clear blue waters. Made up of 12 villages and a small capital, it is rural, quiet, relaxing, and full of local charm.
Gozo is also rich in historic locations such as the 15th century Cittadella castle and the Ggiantija temples, which along with the other Megalithic Temples of Malta are among the world's oldest free-standing structures. Gozo is also said to have been the home of the mythological Calypso, the nymph from Homer’s Odyssey. The island has some amazing natural features such as the Inland sea and Wied il-Mielah Window.
There are many beaches on the island, great hiking trails, and Gozo is considered one of the top diving destinations in the Mediterranean. Gozo has a deep culture in organic farming bringing an abundance of locally grown fresh vegetables and fruit; making it the perfect location for wellness and healing.
From November to March the island is full of lush green fields, wild flowers and herbs, and crisp air, rains fall with mostly sunny days. The sea stays warm to swim in until around the end of December. From April the island begins to warm up leading into the summer months. The warm weather stays until November before the rains begin. These seasonal changes bring great weather to retreats all year round.
RETREAT CENTRE
At the edge of the island just before the beach, between the farmers fields and the village shepherds home, you will find our three Samudra Farmhouses.
The houses are over 400-years-old and have been kept in the traditional style, full of ancient history.
Next to the Farmhouses is our Samudra Shala - our sacred space for sessions and introspection. The Shala has an underground cave dating back to the Palaeolithic times, a unique healing space providing Samudra with depth and authenticity.
THE SHALA
Shala is a Sanskrit word meaning “house” or “home” referred to as a place of safety, temple, retreat or sanctuary. Our Samudra Shala sits between our Farmhouses, an ancient building restored with authentic features including our underground cave which is over 4000-years-old.
The Shala is a silent sacred space where we host sessions during the retreat. On the first floor you will find many ancient wisdom and holistic healing books, oracle cards, games and a cosy space to unwind with a cup of tea. Upstairs we have a private therapy room that extends to an outdoor terrace leading up to a rooftop with sunrise views over the sea.
The underground cave is a unique feature that very few houses still have on the island. You will experience yoga, meditations, breath-work, healing treatments, sound healings and ceremonies in the cave for a deeply immersive experience.
Spiritual folklore tell that caves were used in ancient practices to give us the experience of being inside a womb. This takes us back to the space beyond this physical realm, to the source of creation, before we were given belief systems and attachments. Here we are submersed into our intuitive wisdom, healing abilities and limitless potentials.
